Indeed, thank you.

Every time I walk through Winchester Cathedral it is a mind-trip; this track captures some aspects of it brilliantly.

Merci beaucoup. (Well, the present building - adjacent to its Anglo-Saxon predecessor - was started by William I).

Hi Nas,

That's fantastic. I do not know how you do it - I have spent thirty years looking for this (ok with a few breaks). Thank you so much.

Hi Diane,

We have no stained glass or selves but I do enjoy sitting in a quiet church with sunlight streaming through the windows, which splashes flagstones with mellow colours.

Thanks for your comments.

Prosaic,

I love stained glass and these are quite impressive. We have a few in our home but they are much smaller than these. Several of our wardrobes came from England, as there was a family who came here from there and shipped antiques over to a shop they opened in Lake City - they had a large section in their warehouse of stained glass windows as well. Thanks for posting.

I had trouble with buffering on the Youtube clip but I found this version, which you can listen to online (it should start playing automatically).

You are brilliant - fancy joining Her Majesty's Constabulary?

Well I may be wrong about Digance. But the New Vaudeville one is a completely different song - it is just a jolly 1960s pop tune... pleasant but without depth. Actually it is rather like a song the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band might have sung.

OK I have done some less-than-successful research. NOT by the real singers but at least the real songs: Here's You Tube...

The New Vaudeville's song but not by them:

The one which haunts me (though I don't like this particular execution:

Thanks again,

Thanks Nas, fascinating - I was right about the drugs!

Gosh, Nas you may be right. I have just sent an e-mail to Richard Digance to ask if he did, indeed, perform that song - which I last heard in the late 1970s / early 1980s on Radio  Trent (Nottingham - for those over the pond that is the city of Robin Hood).

Your search skills always astound me - well done and thanks Nas. I'll keep you posted.

Hi en,

Glad it is of interest.

There is, by the way, a "better" song about Winchester Cathedral than he New Vaudeville Band's. Unfortunately, I have no been able to find a copy and have not heard of it for years. But it was a bit like a druggie-trip, where the song imagines the singer flying through the aisle of the Cathedral - so it does actually reflect something about the building. I know it is English folk music and I think sung by Robin Dransfield - so if anyone knows of it, please shout!

Anyway, after that digression...

Thanks again.

Hi Ren,

Thanks. I like popping into village churches when I am out-and-about. They are quiet, restful and contemplative places. I also love our local cathedral, which is grandeur on a massive scale (I believe it has the longest church nave in the British Isles and is longer than any in Western Europe, too. It was re-modelled c.1400, the guide says). Despite all this, the Cathedral is still packed with quiet corners. Here s a link to its official web site's photographic gallery (other pages explain its history - which is considerable as the city was the capital of England, prior to London becoming so)...

Beautiful!  While of course much has been said about Winchester Cathedral. . .and we know the name through song. . .I have never taken the time to visit it online. . .the pics are beautiful and I will enjoy reading the history of the Cathedral. . .and the Close, etc. . .

thanks for sharing.

Ren

Very lovely. . .amazing the time and artistry that went into these works of art. . .

1300's or 1700's. . .the energy of the churches. . .must be amazing in itself. . .then add the beauty of the stained glass. . .

enveloping.

Thanks Nas -

These are from two local churches both of which date to the Thirteenth Century (1200-1299). However, the windows are more recent (axiomatic). I do not know but I would say 1750 onwards. If I find out I shall add to this.

Best wishes,
